Bhakti Vidya Purna Swami, Sastra caksu seminar, Bhaktivedanta Academy 2010

Pleasing means to do what the other person appreciates. If you want to satisfy the Lord you have to do what He likes. And He says what He likes in the sastra. That’s wahy we follow the sastra – to please the Lord.
Bhagavad-gita presents the sanatana-dharma, the eternal function of the living entity, his dharma, the characteristics that exist eternally with the object. The essential point in sanatana-dharma is to think about the Lord. Sanatana is what is applicable everywhere and always. Bhagavad-gita teaches us how to see the eternal nature of everything in its connection to Krsna. Service is the eternal nature of the living entity. It is his eternal religion.
Unless we render service which is connected with the Lord, this is not sanatana-dharma. It does not matter in which rasa are you with the Lord, the essence of all rasas is service.
Ananda maya bhyasat, the living entity wants to be happy but the material things cannot make him really happy. Worshiping Krsna can make us really happy. Krsna is not a sectarian name for God; it means the source of all pleasure.
The living entity cannot stay in Brahman because there is not service there; that’s why he either goes to the spiritual world, or goes to the material world.
Arjuna had good arguments why he should not fight but they were all selfish. Something may be very important for us but if it is not connected to Krsna it is maya. We are shakti, energy, we should be always attached to something, the question is to be connected to Krsna.
According to the definition of Srila Rupa Goswami, first one should be conscious, then Krsna conscious, then this Krsna consciousness should be favorable to Krsna. This is considered devotion.
Spiritual life means don’t do this but do this instead. Spiritual life means spiritual activities. The negative injunctions are useful only to support the positive instructions. Just to negate something in not enough. The entire Bhagavad-gita supports spiritual activities.
A sudra is one who does not know where to apply his compassion. He laments for the body. But at least he is a human being because he has compassion.
One should be able to appreciate the good and the bad things in a person, even if he happens to be one’s enemy.
The problem is not the attachment, the problem is that our attachment is not directed toward Krsna. Like foe example if you have a pen, if you don’t used it for Krsna it is not good, although it may be a very good pen.
Even a great person like Arjuna could not solve the problems of life without the help of the Spiritual Master.
Krsna already has everything; therefore He is interested only in the relationships with His devotees.
The living entities are changing their moods and desires all the time and Krsna, being the only real man, always acts accordingly.
Arjuna wants Krsna to act as his friend, servant, Guru, Supreme Lord, and Krsna is happy to act in all these features just to enhance the relationship with his devotee. For Krsna everything is a matter of relationship. It is not the ritual that is important, rather the ritual is done only as medium for expressing love and affection.
Prabhupada always mentions these two – doubts and misgivings. Doubt means: “I don’t understand how 2 plus 2 equals 4. Please explain to me”. Misgiving means “I understand why 2 plus two equals 4 but I don’t want to be like that”. So the doubts refer to the intelligence, there is no attachment there, there is seemingly a contradiction and when the contradiction is explained it is all right. But the misgiving means that it is not the intelligence but the mind. There is attachment there, there are personal issues.
The soul is active one performs activities in Krsna consciousness and inactive when performs material activities.
When we preach to new people why should not soften and compromise our philosophy, we should rather go beyond the contradictions and explain the common principles behind.
Every living entity had his duties to perform. One should be nonviolent to others because in this way one does not interfere with the rights of others to perform their duties given by God. But if there is someone who puts obstacle for the proper performance of the duties then violence should be applied so that the proper situation be restored again and so that everybody can again peacefully engage in performance of his duties. This is exactly what happened on the battlefield of Kuruksetra.
Nonviolence, as everything else, has no stand independent from God. Everything that exist, even the most sublime and noble concept, quality, or behavior has no value on it’s own, it has value only in connection with Krsna.
