BG 8.16: Krsna’s personal vision of the material cosmos
can save yourself a lot of trouble if you take his words seriously:
He gives a complete panorama/overview: from highest planet down to the lowest all are places of misery where repeated birth and death takes place
May seem hard to understand at first:
- There may be some temporary apparently happy moments but the problems of repeated birth and death don’t make you think twice about pursuing these so-called tiny pleasures
people don’t think about Birth&Death:
- they are purposefully distracted by their living circumstances
- there are people who make plans how to distract people from thinking clearly and deeply about the actual problems of life
- it is not good for business if people are thinking philosophically, asking philosophical questions: what is the meaning of life, how can I solve repeated birth and death
- best for business: work, buy, consume and die
Don’t wonder when people can’ take genuine spiritual knowledge very seriously:
they can’t otherwise they have to change their lives and it causes them to think
From the highest planet down to the lowest all are places of misery -> why am I so attached to it?
it’s amazing how quickly we become bewildered by little temporary material happiness
let there be a few happy moments, tiniest material happiness and we feel comfortable and forget all about to solve the real problems of life
Everyone know these magic moments: yes, that’s what it is all about, you wish to just get more of these moments then everything will be all right
Get false sense of confidence: You know what is life meant to be if you only get more of these moments
- these moments are the greatest enemy -> seem to be innocent but these moments cause you to be bound to the cycle of repeated birth and death
What’s wrong with being materially happy? I’m happy. People become defensive:
Live foolishly: attempts for material happiness are not really in their self-interest: people do not like to admit that they are cheated – sense gratification (used car, s.th from the shop) turned out chunk
People don’t like to admit that their life is not what they make it out to be
Everyone plays the game of let’s pretend – that everything is all right even though we don’t know what we are doing
You surround yourself with friends that think all the same way – let’s all pretend together - that it’s all right although we don’t know what we are doing, who we are
Seeing many people then it looks natural
London summer young people standing outside of pubs on side street with no traffic talking and holding a glass in their hands:
can see that together they are generating a reality
together they are generating a consciousness we are the world, we are together, it’s all right
it’s all right that we feel that way
part of their attitude: challenging: don’ t you wanna become part of us, feel like we feel although we don’t know who we are and what we doing
it’s also easy just to mix with them: just hold a glass and …
We are against mass consensual trance: masses of people voluntarily agree to delude themselves – they don’t like it if anyone wants to wake them up of that trance
Devotees’ thankless task to tell the truth …
When disasters like floods, hurricanes … happen then we begin to think: maybe this is a place of misery – but otherwise the nature of the illusory energy is so strong that there is forgetfulness
essential part of material life is forgetfulness
don’t think that anyone learns lessons by experience
by apply our senses on we get genuine meaningful learning experiences – by acting on what Krsna says
but if you act simply on your senses in reference to material nature – you don’t learn anything, just suffer again and again and never come to the understanding why you are suffering
as soon as you hear from Krsna and applying your senses to what Krsna says then you get realization, enlightenment – you don’t need to learn the hard way
From highest down … you try to see what Krsna says and then you get the experience of being able to see reality
Process: Hearing from Krsna – applying the senses acc. to what Krsna says – get experience
you don’t learn by experience but by what Krsna says
otherwise you are just applying your senses to material existence and going through the same cycle of repeated birth again and again
21:30 Why does material life look so attractive?
we are very tiny and material nature is very strong
BG 7.14: this material energy is practically impossible for you to overcome, means practically impossible for you to figure it out or to control it
But Krsna promises: if you take shelter of Me you can easily cross over the problems of material existence
Not that there are no problems: Living in the material world means a problematic atmosphere but you can easily cross over those problems by taking Krsna’s instructions
---in the material world will always be problems but Krsna promises when you take my instructions then you can cross over them
Entertainment: stress on entertainment and people can’t live without entertainment
people are so accustomed to entertainment: radio, TV, movie, …
if you take it all away people see that they only work – why working if no entertainment
Krsna-conscious person functions in a completely different way: their senses are connecting to the spiritual energy – therefore get a completely different experience
Can’t be understood by those who are under the grip of material nature
Devotees live in a special dimension
You have the vision of seeing everything in relation to Krsna
will become so intense that wherever you look it will awaken your KC: then you know you are nearing the perfect stage
Krsna gives overview of material cosmos – includes all planets in this universe – don’t waste time in going from lower standards of living to higher standards of living – it’s not that important
better you change the energy you are operating under – change the influence of energy you are living under -> that is the real progress
as long as you are under the grip of material energy there must be misery
that misery is caused by forgetfulness of Krsna
as soon as you are taught to see Krsna everywhere – where is the misery
you see everything in relation to Krsna – there is no question of misery
KC frees one from the cycle of repeated birth and death
it is also so special and deep that devotees don’t mind taking birth again as long as they are engaged in devotional service – mama janma ….
From the highest planet down to the lowest all are places of misery – why can’t you say it in a more positive way – that’s too much -> maybe we are too much
we dream so much, delude ourselves so much because of our material desires
how material desire delude you: when it comes to you, it changes the whole way you see the world – suddenly you feel opportunities for self-fulfilment, self-expression, reciprocation, indulgence,… the whole consciousness changes -> you start to feel at home in material nature (which is a very dangerous feeling – to feel at home in material nature)
-> proper way how to feel in material existence: we should always feel to be out of place- we do not belong here
if you understand that everything is Krsna’s energy you’ll feel at home – you’ll feel at home (not in material energy) but in relation to Krsna
through service to be connected to Krsna everywhere
take away dev. service: you have alien atmosphere for devotee
don’t want to feel at home in MW but at home in dev. Service
BG: what is night for materialist is daytime for spiritualist (always incompatibility between the two) -> the genuine spiritualist and the materialist don’t get along: have a completely different ways of looking at the same world
- materialist sees world as offering opportunities for sense gratification and material progress
- spiritualist sees world as offering opportunities for Krsna’s service
two completely different visions
----- try to apply what you read and see through Krsna’s words and then the experience of the world will be genuine the more you try to apply Krsna’s words and see through them
